Samsung Galaxy S8 Codenamed ‘Project Dream’: 4K Display Rumored Again

The Samsung Galaxy S8, reportedly codenamed ‘Project Dream’, is once again being rumored to feature a 4K display in anticipation of Daydream VR certification. Considering other confirmed Daydream-Ready phones have already been announced with as low as Full HD OLED screens, Samsung is clearly aiming to future-proof and top-shelf its next S series device as far as virtual reality goes.

The obvious connection between Google’s Daydream VR platform and ‘Project Dream’ notwithstanding, we already know Samsung is planning to deliver a new USB Type-C version of the Gear VR alongside the Galaxy Note 7. But if you ‘re looking for the absolute best VR experience on your next Galaxy, you might be better off holding out until the 4K-equipped Galaxy S8 arrives sometime around MWC 2017.

As you may recall, Samsung showed off a 5.5-inch 4K display “for VR” at a recent display conference, which analysts are rather obviously claiming would be ideal for the Galaxy S8. In case you like numbers, that equates to a pixel density of 806 ppi. How Samsung plans to power mobile VR at 4K resolution is anyone’s guess though. While the Galaxy S8 specs are still largely a mystery, Android 7.0 Nougat should be running out of the box, complete with its Sustained Performance Mode for VR. For those of you doubting the need for a 4K display on a smartphone, at the very least it means we should also get a decent battery bump too.Do you think 4K is necessary, even for VR? Will VR factor into your next purchasing decision?
