Alcatel Tru Arrives at MetroPCS With a Low $29 Price Tag

Alcatel has announced a new highly affordable Android smartphone for MetroPCS, dubbed the Tru. The smartphone costs just $29 after rebates, making it an ideal choice for those looking at buying an inexpensive second phone.

The Alcatel Tru features a 5-inch display with 480 x 854 FWVGA resolution, which translates to a pixel density value of just 196 pixels per inch. However, performance shouldn’t be very disappointing though, with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 210 quad-core chipset clocked at 1.1 GHz inside. For such a cheap smartphone, Alcatel Tru impresses with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of onboard storage. The storage is further expandable by up to 32GB thanks to a microSD card slot.

The Alcatel Tru comes with a 5MP resolution autofocus camera on the rear, with an LED flash. For selfies, it gets a 2MP fixed-focus snapper on the front. There are various Polaroid software filters on offer in the camera app, which you can use to enhance your selfies. Alcatel promises the Tru can deliver all-day use with its 2000mAh battery, although we’re not sure if heavy users will be able to get through a day with it. In terms of connectivity, the smartphone offers all the basic connectivity features such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS with A-GPS, and even 4G LTE network support. While the hardware specs aren’t too bad for the price, the smartphone runs on the outdated Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system. Given its low price, we wouldn’t count on an upgrade to a newer version of Android anytime soon.

The smartphone is made out of polycarbonate but does offer a soft noir faux leather back, which makes it a comfortable device to hold in the hand. It will be available at participating MetroPCS stores across the United States starting today. It can also be bought online via the MetroPCS website. Overall, the Alcatel Tru is by no means an impressive smartphone as far as the specs go, but for the price, it definitely is a very good option in our opinion.
